| Postal Codes of Jamaica - Explanations and List |
The Jamaica Postal Code System was implemented sometime this year with just about no fanfare. Almost no-one I know has heard of its implementation.
The code is a seven-character code based on the following:
First two characters - Country Code: JM for everywhere in Jamaica.
Next character - Zone Code:
Zone A includes the parishes of Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine
Zone B includes the parishes of St. Mary, Portland and St. Thomas
Zone C includes the parishes of St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James and Hanover
Zone D includes the parishes of Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Manchester and Clarendon
Next two characters - Parish Code: These are made by stripping the relevant parish names of their sainthood and using the first and last letters of the parish
Zone A:
Kingston = KN
St. Andrew = AW
St. Catherine = CE
Zone B:
St. Mary = MY
Portland = PD
St. Thomas = TS
Zone C:
St. Ann = AN
Trelawny = TY
St. James = JS
Hanover = HR
Zone D:
Westmoreland = WD
St. Elizabeth = EH
Manchester = MR
Clarendon = CN
Last two characters - Post Office Code:
The Post Office Code is a two-digit numerical representation for the relevant Post Office. It indicates where the relevant Post Office falls in an alphabetical list of Post Offices in the relevant Parish. For example, the Allman Town Post Office in the Parish of Kingston is the first Post Office in an alphabetical list of the Post Offices in the Parish of Kingston, hence its Post Office Code would be 01.
Example:
I am in Jamaica (JM), in the Zone A (A) parish of St. Andrew (AW), and am served by the Half-Way-Tree Post Office, which would be eighth (08) in an alphabetical list of St. Andrew Post Offices, so my Postal Code is JMAAW08
Now, for reasons beyond my comprehension, the website for the Postal Corporation of Jamaica does not include a list of Postal Codes with its list of Post Offices , so, as a public service to Jamaicans and to those who wish to contact Jamaica by post, I include here:
