Enterprise- Based Training (EBT) Every Jamaican business, regardless of the
product or service being offered, is seeking to
have a competitive advantage in order to remain
viable in the local and overseas marketplace.
Owners and managers have to be constantly
adjusting in order to meet new business
challenges and to keep their operations
relevant, efficient and profitable. And, the one
common link with all business is 5the human
resource element – the people behind the
business. Employers now realize that they have
to invest in the constant development of the
human resource to ensure that their employees
are capable of producing world class goods and
services al competitive prices.
The employees themselves are also keen on
personal upgrading and development to be able to
make meaningful contributions in a dynamic
environment where change is the order of the
day. There is where the HEART Trust/ National
Training Agency’s Enterprise Based Training
comes in – helping to facilitate-workers’
enthusiasm while delivering on a promise to
provide a trained and certified Jamaican
workforce, ready to fulfill the vast potential
that exist in our people.
EBT- Direct and Targeted The HEART Trust/ NTA have always had a
meaningful relationship with its stakeholders in
industry. However, what is now being
contemplated through enterprise based training (EBT)
are more direct and targeted training
interventions in the workplace.
Employers have always benefited from traditional
services such as the School Leavers Training
Opportunities Programme (SLTOPs), the
Apprenticeship programme and the Workforce
Improvement programme. Under EBT, these services
will remain along the provision of technical
support and facilitation of employee assessment
for certification.
However, given the increased demands from the
marketplace for more diversity in employee job
ready skills, enterprise based training will
also focus on the critical issues of marketing
brokering training services and workplace
intervention. Trained professional agents will
also provide training for employees in areas
such as recruitment, job placement, training and
coaching and employment facilitation.
Competency Training and Direct Workforce
Intervention Two key planks of Enterprise-Based Training
A key component of the EBT interventions is
competency based training and workforce
upgrading in a bid to ensure that workers are
almost a perfect fit for their job tasks, hence
boosting productivity levels.
Perhaps the best components of the HEART package
is that employees can be exposed to this
training while on the job thereby allowing them
to improve themselves while earning.
EBT’s key focus for industry intervention is on
the firm’s productivity while taking the
following into consideration.
• Flexible Curricular – opportunities for
learner within the firm to contribute to the
content of the training.
• Flexible Training which is responsive to the
changing needs of the workplace. The background
of the learner is taken into consideration while
formulating training requirements.
• Identifying Learners who require certification
as opposed to training.
• Performance based assessment- for specific
jobs.
• National Certification (NVQ-J) – recognized
locally and internationally.
