Cover letters are a very important factor when seeking a job. Your cover letter says a lot about you. The way you organize it, your use of punctuation marks, neatness and the whole form of presentation can determine whether you get the job or not. And as people say first impression is a lasting one.

Here are some tips on how to do your cover letter

1: Research before you write: The last thing you want to do with your cover letter is repeat all that is in you résumé. Learn as much about the company you are applying to before you send anything to them.
Two reasons:
» The more you know about your employer’s needs, the more compelling your letter can be. Review your company’s website and other promotional material to acquire the relevant information that will assist you to sell yourself.

» You will definitely impress your prospective employer by inserting relevant information about the company into your letter. This demonstrates that you have done your homework and it is not simply a generic or mass-mailed letter.

2: Set yourself apart from the rest of applicants: Incorporate in a paragraph of your cover letter the knowledge that you have of the company and your potential employer. Make a list of how you would assist them to achieve goals. Do not make your cover letter be more than one page. Prioritize and put only the relevant information in the letter that the employer needs to know.

3. Sell Yourself: Be positive and tell yourself that you are the best candidate for the job you are applying for. You cannot sell yourself if you do not know that you are the best candidate then you cannot sell yourself and should not apply for the job right away. Remember you are competing with hundreds of others for the job so you should present yourself so the potential employer can see why he/she should hire you. You should state what you are bringing to the table so self oriented.

4. Personalize Your Cover Letter: Address your letter to a specific person. Go out on a limb to find out the name of your potential employer and be sure to spell their name correctly.
